/Science and Research News Articles/ - MONROVIA, CA, April 18, 2008 - Dr. Risto Kauppinen, Professor of Radiology at Dartmouth College will be speaking at GTCbio's 2nd Annual Rediscovering Biomarkers Conference on July 10-11, 2008 in Boston, MA. Dr. Kauppinen will present on "Searching Limits for Non-invasive Detection of Endogenous Biomarkers by Magnetic Resonance."
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), a spectroscopic technique that is most specific for chemical structure, provides a non-invasive window to biochemistry in vivo. Owing to the non-invasive nature of NMR, endogenous compounds at several organisatorial levels in biology, i.e. cells, tissue specimens and tissues in situ, are detected without pre-processing of biological specimens. Recently, powerful NMR spectroscopy techniques have been developed for biological use expediting assignment of a large number of endogenous metabolites from a variety of metabolic pathways. It has become evident that several of endogenous compounds, as detected by multi-nuclear NMR, are putative 'biomarkers' for tissue type, status and viability, for instance in the brain and several forms of tumours. Combined with multivariate statistics and neural computing, NMR spectroscopy data bear great information value both for both preclinical and clinical purposes. A recent introduction of dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP) into biological NMR has enabled to probe enzyme catalysed reactions with high sensitivity opening new avenues to widen applications of NMR spectroscopy in vivo.

The presentation will describe Multinuclear NMR techniques used for detection of metabolites ex vivo and in vivo, NMR spectroscopic data analysis for 'biomarker approach,' Putative endogenous NMR biomarkers for various disease states and treatment monitoring, such as in neurodegenerative conditions and cancer, and DNP technology for detection of cancer treatment response in vivo.

The 2nd Annual Rediscovering Biomarkers Conference will expose attendees to the latest advancements and developments in biomarkers and predictive medicine.
