Joseph D. Towles to Be Profiled in Exclusive Registry
Joseph D. Towles has devoted his career to helping people using engineering and science
CHICAGO, IL, October 12, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joseph D. Towles, Research Health Scientist at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in medical research.
Dr. Towles has 13 years of experience in his field. He uses experimental and computational approaches to study the biomechanics and control of the hand following neurologic injury (e.g. stroke, spinal cord injury), to simulate surgical and rehabilitative treatments to improve hand function after injury, and to explore the integration of the mechanics of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems in the control of human movement. He attributes his success to the support and training he received in graduate school at Stanford University and as a post-doctoral fellow at Northwestern University and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
Dr. Towles received a PhD in mechanical engineering from Stanford University in 2003 and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 1996. He is a member of several professional organizations—the American Society of Biomechanics, International Society of Biomechanics, Society for Neuroscience, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Neural Control of Movement and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. Dr. Towles plans to pursue a faculty position and continues to strive for excellence in the study of movement disorders following neurologic impairment.
