Susan M. Conrath was driven to enter her career by her desire to prevent disease in individuals throughout the country

WASHINGTON, DC, November 5, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- CAPT Susan M. Conrath, Scientist Director of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in scientific analysis.

Dr. Conrath is a health and environmental professional with over 40 years of experience [11 years in the private sector, followed by over 29 years in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps]. She became involved in her profession in order to help others. After directing the Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory at Frederick Cancer Research Center, Dr. Conrath joined the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps, a uniformed health service led by the U.S. Surgeon General, under the auspices of the Department of Health and Human Services. This service is dedicated to preventing disease, research, and promoting and delivering health care services throughout the country. Dr. Conrath has attained the rank of CAPT (0-6) in the USPHS Commissioned Corps, where she has had numerous interesting assignments. She served as Team Leader for the Medical/Science Team of the Special Investigations Unit on Gulf War Illnesses [Desert Storm Syndrome] for the US Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee. Currently on detail to the Environmental Protection Agency, she is recognized as a national and international expert in indoor radon. She was invited to give testimony on indoor radon to the President's Cancer Panel, and served on the World Health Organization's editing committee for the recently released WHO Handbook on Indoor Radon. She also directed EPA's National Survey on Environmental Management of Asthma and routinely reviews indoor environments and epidemiological scientific publications and data for policy implications.

A graduate of the State University of New York, New Paltz, she also holds a M.S. in Microbiology, and a M.Phil and Ph.D. in Human Ecology from The George Washington University, as well as a master's degree in public health (MPH) from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. CAPT Conrath has received numerous PHS and EPA Awards and has led a personally gratifying career. In the near future, Dr. Conrath plans to retire and venture into the private sector.
