Dr. John Hubbard is an accomplished psychiatrist, professor and medical writer
TUSCALOOSA, AL, July 19, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. John R. Hubbard, Psychiatrist for Alabama Psychiatric Services, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in psychiatry, research and writing.
Dr. Hubbard is driven by his perseverance, vision and passion for learning. After earning a Ph.D. and experiencing success as a professor of biochemistry at such prestigious universities as Harvard Medical School and the Medical College of Virginia, he decided to obtain an MD. The degree allowed him to continue his research and teaching with greater medical understanding, while providing him the opportunity to care for patients as well. He chose to specialize in psychiatry because of his fascination with the human brain, behavior and potential. As an academic psychiatrist, he was a professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Vanderbilt Medical School. For the past 11 years, he has practiced at Alabama Psychiatric Services, where he specializes in caring for individuals with general psychiatric illnesses, chemical dependency and addiction problems.
In addition to working with patients, Dr. Hubbard is an accomplished medical writer. Thus far, he has published 12 books on psychiatry, addiction, stress, endocrinology, motivation, and personal growth. Six of these titles are texts for medical professionals, while the others are for the general public. A few of the titles include "Great Life Choices for Teens", "Preparing for and Managing High-Risk Situations in the Lives of Professional Athletes" and "Now What? Straight Thinking for the Heart and Mind: An Inmate's Guide." Soon to be released titles include "From Stressed to Blessed" and "Exploring the Human Brain." Dr. Hubbard has also published more than 70 research articles, reviews and book chapters. He plans to continue his medical writing in the years to come and complete his first fiction novel, which is set in the psychiatric and scientific worlds that he knows well.
Dr. Hubbard's achievements have stemmed from his excellent education. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1976. In 1980, he earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry, and in 1990, an MD, from the Medical College of Virginia, which is now known as VCU School of Medicine. During his third year of residency in psychiatry at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, he was awarded the esteemed Laughlin Fellowship from the American College of Psychiatrists. Dr. Hubbard is board-certified in both psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. He remains current with evolving trends in his field through memberships in the American Medical Association and American Psychiatric Association. His achievements have received numerous formal recognitions; in 2010, he was named one of America's Top Psychiatrists by the Consumer's Research Council of America.
Having worked directly with professional athletes in the NFL's Substance Abuse Program, Dr. Hubbard enjoys following the NFL and college football in his spare time. He also enjoys spending time with his family, playing basketball and tennis, and pursuing spiritual growth. Dr. Hubbard supports several local churches and multiple charities, such as The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Wounded Warrior Fund.
